What are good, fun, semi-clean, crafts that mothers and sons can do together?

I have a 5 year son and we spend almost all of our time at home (after work and school). He is glued to the TV, and I want some ideas of fun, interesting crafts that we can do together. We made stepping stones last week and he LOVED it, but I need more ideas.
I started my son crafting by buying unfinished wood things like spice racks, thermometers, and helped him paint them. We used paint that washes off easily. Later we graduated to bookcases and furniture that we would assemble, then paint. Now he builds birdhouses and earns his own money, despite severe autism.
He can’t talk, tie his shoes or even use the bathroom, but he can build!
